About us

Who are we?

We are a group of volunteers from The Church of St. Mary Magdalene (which is located at the intersection of Manning Avenue and Ulster Street, in Toronto) and the wider community across Toronto who have formed a sponsorship committee.

We are from diverse faith traditions (including no faith tradition ;), backgrounds and life experience.  Each of us has been moved to take action to try to help at least one family find a new home in Toronto.

What are we trying to do?

To resettle one or more refugee families in need in Toronto, supporting them financially for their first year and socially for their first year and beyond.

What are our qualifications?

The Manning-Ulster Refugee Project is under the auspices of The Church of St. Mary Magdalene (SMM) and AURA. SMM has already sponsored two refugee families in 2012-13 ad 2014-15. We supported them financially through their first year and our social support is ongoing. Both families are settled and doing well.

What is our current fundraising goal?

Raising $50,000 or more to help resettle one or more families.

For other donation options, including:

  • Setting up a monthly donation
  • Making a donation in honour of, or in memory of someone
  • Sending a cheque or money order

see our “How to Donate” page.

Are donations tax deductible?

YES. All donations are go to The Church of St. Mary Magdalene and are tax deductible. Our group is entirely volunteer and donations all go directly to supporting the families.

Who will we be sponsoring?

The family or families we support will be among those deemed most vulnerable by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), and by the Canadian government. It is likely that they will include several young children.

When will they arrive?

Our latest information is that they could arrive between February and May, 2016

I have non-monetary donations. What should I do with them?

We are not yet collecting furniture, clothing and household items. This will begin when we know who our families are – how many children, of what ages, special needs etc. If you would like us to contact you when we know what’s needed please email  [email protected] and tell us what you may be able to contribute.
